Question 1 – Obedience Classes for the Young Pup

My mixed breed puppy is aged twelve weeks. I would like him to be trained for obedience for which I want to enroll him in training classes for obedience. I am told that the minimum age for the dogs for enrolling in such classes in my town is 6 months and my puppy does not qualify because of younger age. I am unable to wait that long because his behavior at times is pretty bad and my parents will ensure that I get rid of him if his behavior does not improve. This is the reason why I want him to be trained immediately.

Answer 1 – The technique for training puppies in the age group of 12 to 20 weeks is totally different from that of other dogs of higher age. Many of the trainers are not familiar with this method since they do not update their knowledge with the latest in animal behavior research.

Many of the trainers do not specialize in training young puppies. The importance of training the dogs at younger ages is recognized by the trainers who have up to date information on training various ages of dogs. However, these trainers avoid accepting puppies for obedience training in a class because the puppy training requires a lot of patience and understanding which the owner of the puppy does not possess.

Question 2 – My Samoyed & His Strange Desire for Cow Chasing

My dog is a Samoyed which lives with me in a cow farm; my dog has a habit of chasing cows very frequently and I am afraid that any of the cows might fall and get hurt; alternately the cow might fall on the dog and injure it. I am interested in getting proper advice to break his habit of chasing cows.

Answer 2 – It is possible to give you an answer for all the dogs other than the Samoyed; this breed is totally different from all other breeds. The ancestors of the Samoyed dog were entrusted with the responsibility of going on their own, round up reindeer and herd them back to the farm. In this no human intervention takes place. May be you are not aware of this.

These dogs have not lost their herding instinct even after the passage of a number of years and in fact they are deeply embedded in their blood.

Your Samoyed is responding to its herding instinct and if you try to break this it could affect the mental stability of the dog. My first recommendation is to enroll your dog in an obedience training class. If the dog is thoroughly trained on basic obedience then you could entrust the job of curbing your dog’s appetite for herding to a specialized instructor.
