How To Prepare For A Medical Emergency

What would you do in the event that a member of your family, or a neighbour or workmate, suddenly experiences a medical emergency and has to be rushed to hospital? Are you prepared for the worst?

You’re likely to have to provide paramedics, nurses and doctors with detailed health information. You might include details of medical conditions like diabetes and Asthma, medication and maybe injury details. Your document might also include vaccination details, medication that is currently being used and details of recent illnesses and injuries.

We tend to think that, if the worst should happen, all we need to do is call the emergency services. But they will have many important questions that need to be answered and, ideally, you need to be prepared to answer them.

One solution to this problem is to produce an Emergency Document for every member of your family and your household. The same system might even be used in the workplace. The Emergency Document would summarise information that would be relevant to a healthcare professional such as current medical conditions, allergies, vaccinatioin information and more.

These documents are usually best put together by the person concerned. When writing them they should assume that they are unconscious and unable to communicate with the doctors and nurses. Think about the sort of information they would need to know under such circumstances?

Print hard copies of your families emergency documents and keep them in a safe location. Update them whenever necessary with up to date, relevant medical information. If you need to go to an emergency room then take the relevant documents with you and make certain that medical staff take a copy and don’t retain the original. Your Emergency documentation can save a lot of time that would otherwise be spent repeating the same information.

It is particularly useful to carry emergency documents when travelling. Think of the document as an addition to your travel insurance policy. It would take only a few minutes to produce a document like this but it could save your life.

if you’re an older traveler you would do well to consider senior travel insurance and you may like to consider pre-existing medical condition travel insurance.
